ETNA - TAORMINA
DEPARTURES FROM
Reggio Calabria (7.45 a.m.) and Villa San Giovanni (8.15 a.m.)
with return at 7.20/19.40 p.m.
Meeting in Reggio Calabria or Villa San Giovanni. Accommodation in private car/minibus and boarding a scheduled ferry for a scenic crossing of the Strait of Messina. Disembark in Messina and continue to reach Etna. The Sapienza Refuge, where we will arrive, is located at an altitude of 1,910 meters on the south side of Etna. Although it has been repeatedly threatened and damaged by lava flows, which often brushed it, the refuge has endured over time since its construction in 1936, when it replaced an old Casa Cantoniera used as a shelter since the late 1800s.
There are several bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and it is the main meeting point on Etna. Free time of about 3 hours. Walk on foot (about 200 m) for a self-guided visit of the Silvestri Craters (Lower and Upper). It is possible to visit both. the Lower one is very easy to visit and in about 5 minutes you are on the crater rim. While for the Upper one, you need to climb about 30 minutes on foot. Option to take the cable car and go up to 2,500 m or reach 3,000 m with cable car + 4X4 jeep (optional with supplement). Lunch on your own. 2:00 pm meeting and departure for Taormina. Arrival and free time of about 2:30 h. You can take a walk along the famous Corso Umberto or visit the Ancient Theatre, Palazzo Corvaja, Piazza IX Aprile with the baroque Church of San Giuseppe and the Clock Tower, the Cathedral of San Nicolò. Meeting for the return and continuation to the morning departure points.
